The Ecobrick deposit system

_

Waste is valuable and usable!

The ‘plastic-brick’

In 2018 we introduced a deposit system in Bukit Lawang helping the people, the environment, and the animals.

Firstly, the locals collect the waste, then clean it and then finally stuff the plastic waste into a large plastic bottle using a stick. This means the bottles will be hard and weigh half a kilogram. Finally, these so-called ‘Ecobricks’ are exchanged for 5000 IDR (Indonesian rupiah). For the locals, this means a big, hot meal, roughly costing 30 cents.

Thanks to this system, the plastic-waste is isolated from the environment. No harm can come from this and the Ecobricks will be used to build walls, benches, and tables.

David Heitmann, our civil engineer, has developed a sustainable construction concept together with Münster University and the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. Over 250 tons of plastic waste should be removed from the environment and be isolated in the walls!

The rainforests and rivers will be cleaned, whilst the locals can generate an additional income for themselves and their families.

The biggest recycling village in the world

By the end of 2021, the largest Recycling Village in the world will be standing, made from half a million Ecobricks. 250 tonnes of plastic waste will be built into the walls of the different buildings and isolated so that it can no longer put strain on the surrounding environment.

A village that helps twofold!

The goal of Project Wings is to leave behind a self-sustaining system the locals can lead themselves. With that, the village generates an income. Many different structures have been proposed which are sensible economically as well as environmentally.

The Green Education Centre serves as a free classroom space for further education but also can be used by other schools and classes. Many schools don’t have enough space and are lacking the technical facilities. You’ll be able to find the Green Library, a computer room and a fully equipped classroom in the Green Education Centre.

In order to be able to offer children and young people in the area to develop freely, every Monday and Thursday children under 18 will be able to visit the village and are allowed to use every facility free of cost. The other days are accessible for adults and other visitors. Almost 150 new jobs will be created in and around the village.

Protection of the rainforest

_

Generation Co

With consideration to the extreme depletion of the rainforest, Generation Co carries out important persuasion and educational work. They approach the plantation owners and explain the consequences as well as the downsides of single-crop harvesting, like palm oil cultivation. It is their aim that more plantation owners switch to permaculture gradually or fewer harmful construction methods.

Additionally, with the help of former plantation’s compost they are reforesting. Therefore, the existing rainforest will be saved, and key habitats will be won back.

Erna’s Ecofarm

Erna runs her own large-scale eco-farm through sustainable and traditional farming methods. Thousands of plant cuttings will be raised by her with love until they are ready to be planted.

High quality compost will be produced by the organic waste which the Care Community regularly brings to her. With that, Generation Co can enrich the soil again with nutrition after suffering under single-crop harvesting.

Erna is the first point of contact for our volunteers and consequently the beating heart of our projects.

PLASTIC / RECYCLING

_

The Green Class is a voluntary, green classroom. Masno, Imam and other teachers from the area team up in order to promote awareness and provide environmental education to younger age groups. Now around 100-120 children and young people are visiting the Education Centre to be taught about plastic and our influence on the planet.

Through excursions and workshops the young people learn responsibility for the local environment and diverse recycling techniques. This newly learned knowledge will be passed onto their family and friends, whereby more people will be made aware of these topics. It serves as a green classroom, as well as a café and meeting point for discussing topics like environmental protection and sustainability.

ANIMALS / ANIMAL PROTECTION

Care Sumatra

Care Sumatra is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the last areas where Orangutans are living. These human-like beings are severely endangered from poaching and forest clearing.

Care Sumatra has, with their state-recognized organisation, a big influence on important areas.

What’s special about this is that with help from our financial support, a ranger patrol could be set up in 2019. The rangers not only protect the animals from poachers but also protect the rainforest from illegal deforestation.

Project days at educational establishments

_

By working together with different educational establishments, we are reaching the younger generations. These form an important pillar of our system when it comes to the topic of environmental protection.

We are regularly visiting schools and designing project days and weeks together. Therefore, the children and young people already learn from a young age what ´environmental protection´ fundamentally means. With help from interactive lectures, numerous workshops and strong school projects, the children quickly get to know the various ways to act more environmentally aware.

We act with children and young people on equal terms and show why we need to help our planet in an age-appropriate manner. For this, we have drafted a concept which provides educational establishments and adults an initial outline. Next to the project days we are also conducting individual teaching-units and are represented at school events.

Donate your pledge and recycle half a kilogram of plastic waste!

On request, we can create deposit-containers with the students which will be set up in the school. For every deposit-bottle thrown in, we can buy an Ecobrick in Indonesia. On the one hand this will see half a kilogram of plastic waste collected from the rainforest, whilst at the same time someone can get a hot meal from this money.

REGIONAL COMMITMENT

KOTTENHEIM MEADOW ORCHARD LTD

With the support of the meadow orchard in Kottenheim (Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany) we support the preservation of flora and fauna locally. Meadow orchards are habitats worth supporting, as well as being a home for various types of animals and plants. Consequently, we are creating a safe area of living with sufficient food, especially for bees, our most important pollinator. The meadow orchards in the Kottenheim area have a huge population within Rheinland-Pfalz. In a long-term project, volunteers were recruited to revive the cultivation of fruit trees. For the salvation of the population and planting new trees the costs annually are 20,000 Euros, which the large part is able to be covered by a subsidy.

What the small superheroes have achieved so far:

  • 3.500 m2 of new wildflower meadows have been laid out
  • 164 fruit trees have been planted
  • 482 fruit trees have been tended to
